Transforming Touch®
A somatic approach for developmental trauma
Transforming Touch® is a psychobiological approach to developmental trauma (childhood experiences that interrupt natural growth and development). Transforming Touch® is developed from attachment theory, Polyvagal Theory, and Somatic Touch and Regulation. Adverse childhood experiences can change the wiring of our bodies and brain, locking us into “survival physiology.” In survival physiology it can be difficult to feel safe, see possibilities, move towards connection or make healthy choices; you may find yourself confused by relationships or without a strong sense of self.
Transforming Touch® follows a predictable routine of light, therapeutic touch (clients remain clothed and only shoes are removed), and supports specific areas of the body involved in the nervous system’s stress response, such as the adrenal glands and brain stem. The repetition and consistency of this modality can foster a greater sense of safety as the nervous system learns what to expect and the attachment system heals. By bringing support to these areas of the body, the nervous system is able to gradually soften, allowing both body and mind to experience a more restful and regulated state. Later sessions can include primitive reflexes or other enhancements that increase nervous system regulation/ capacity, and support the integration of interrupted early development.
